  • Gerts Academy is a unique, extremely thorough and instructive program. It contains a comprehensive spectrum of topic, which every conductor is dealing with on a daily basis, but which are very seldom, if ever, discussed. Being a priceless help for a beginner as well as an advanced conductor, it encourages conductors of all levels to reflect and understand better the profession and the mission of a conductor.
    Kristiina Poska

Chief conductor of Flanders Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of Latvian National Symphony Orchestra
  • The online conducting course of Mihhail Gerts is by far the most comprehensive and fascinating masterclass I have attended. Every lesson is filled with knowledge of experience. Gerts shares some of the secrets and maybe the most important tricks of good conductors with great openness. I recommend it to everyone serious with conducting, I have learned more in this masterclass in a very short period of time than my first year in conducting. Its like information in a pill.

Student, Hochschule für Musik und Medien Hannover
  • I believe Mihhail Gerts truly understands the actual role of a conductor. Most importantly, his teaching methods actively encourage and support the development of these qualities in the student. From my personal lessons with him at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin I have come to feel much more confident and secure in the role of conducting, gaining the feeling of having had many years of experience after a very short time. This course is a clear distillation of his methods and his advice would be valuable for any young conductor’s development.

  • Mihhail Gerts has created an exciting new platform for aspiring professional conductors. The Academy provides theoretical and practical advice, which has greatly contributed to my development as a young conductor. The unique combination of his 20 years of conducting experience and his understanding of the digital possibilities of our time will provide you with all the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in the conducting field.

With 20 years of conducting experience Mihhail Gerts has performed with over 50 professional orchestras such as Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, BBC Symphony, NHK Tokyo and many others. Alongside with guest-conducting orchestras worldwide he is currently teaching conducting and score reading at Berlin Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and the Barenboim-Said Akademie Berlin.

Gerts has extensive operatic experience having worked from 2007-2014 as a conductor at the Estonian National Opera and from 2015 - 2017 as a 1. Kapellmeister at Theater Hagen, Germany. During these 10 years he conducted over 40 productions of opera, ballet and operetta. He has also been the finalist of the Donatella Flick and Evgeny Svetlanov conducting competitions, as well as the stipendiate of the Dirigentenforum program of German Music Council.

At the initial stage of the career, he was the conductor of the unique Grammy laureate Estonian National Male Choir (2005-2007). He was also music director of various commercial musical productions, which gave him the experience of working in the industry of pop-music and drama theatre.

Having studied the piano and conducting first in the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and later in the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, he researched the subject of conductor’s mental models during four years of doctoral studies, defending his PhD in 2011.

In 2021 he founded the Gerts Academy – the first online conducting platform, which addresses systematically all the topics related to conducting.

Mihhail Gerts biography

From the critics

  • His ability to push his ensemble forward, towards a sound density, and a magmatic strength is extraordinary. Behind his expressive and graceful gestures, under his baton, he holds his ensemble with supple authority.
    Jaques Schmitt
  • “Gerts super, Santa Cecilia idem”. Orchestra dell´Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia was
excellently conducted by this dynamic and communicative conductor.
  • With astonishing precision, highly expressives gestures and warmth, his conducting was captivating from the first to the last note. Gerts rose completely above the technical challenges of conducting which he solved without easing up on the tension for one second.
  • Gerts held the reins of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia very well, proving to be an attentive connoisseur of the pieces performed, clean in his gesture and incisive as an interpreter.
  • Mihhail Gerts delivered with Orchestre Philarmonique de Radio France an interpretation of rare eloquence with ample, supple, graceful and precise gestures.
  • Gerts impressed the crowd to such an extent, that many were left hoping for a swift re-invitation.
    Helsingin Sanomat
  • Mihhail Gerts and the orchestra were truly magical. Gerts had a wonderful cool and calm demeanour, the power and passion came so naturally to him with what looked like very little physical effort.
